The Sound Exchange is a website managed by the British Philharmonia Orchestra. The site has an appealing look and you can find very interesting information there. The "Orchestra" section allows you to explore the orchestra using Philharmonia players to demonstrate their instruments and hundreds of clips from Philharmonia CDs to show how composers write for the orchestra. In the "Sections" area, you can explore the different sections of the orchestra. In the "Sound Samples" section is possible to download sound samples specially recorded by Philharmonia Orchestra players. With the help of sequencing software (like Cubase), these sound samples can be used to create any kind of music, From piccolo to double bass there are single notes, phrases and whole orchestra samples to choose from. With the click of a mouse you can even play the Philharmonia Orchestra! "The Sound Exchange" section allows musicians to share their work. You can submit loops, samples or finished tracks, no matter of style of music it is. The "Groove Search" is a great initiative from the Philharmonia Orchestra. It works like this: you can send a 10-30 second music groove in any format (recorded voice and/or instrument), the grooves will then be judged by a panel of industry experts and 5 winning grooves will be arranged for 40 piece orchestra and recorded by the Philharmonia Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London. The "Composer Resource" area is also a fantastic idea from the Philharmonia. Three times a year a small ensemble of Philharmonia musicians will meet in a recording studio to play and rehearse new music. The pieces will often be 'works in progress' so that the feedback from the musicians can help shape the development of the music. The Composer Resource sessions will be broadcast live online and selected composers will login to watch the webcast. The musicians will be able to talk directly to camera, but there will also be someone there typing up their comments in a Live Chat facility. You will be able to respond, ask questions and talk to the studio through the Live Chat which the musicians will see on a screen in the studio. Recordings will be made so that following each session people will be able to review the session and composers will be sent a CD of their piece being rehearsed.
This is just to give you a general idea of what you can find at "The Sound Exchange". To explore all the website features go there and take a look!
